On the Road Again

Only five days after Graph Expo, the team from GFI Innovations packed up its bus and headed west to visit printers in Iowa yesterday—first, the Quad Cities and Des Moines, then it's on to Omaha, Wichita and Kansas City, pushing westward to the Pacific Coast. (The colorful RV, shown above, made a stop at Graphic Arts Online's offices in suburban Chicago on its way out of town.)
Meanwhile, a second "Spot Color at Your Fingertips" bus is in New York and heading south, doing the East Coast leg of a national tour that started last spring. Most events are two-day demonstration-only open houses, while others will include technical seminars presented by Fuji, Van Son Holland Ink and their vendors. Seeing Is Believing So, why go to the trouble and expense of blanketing the country during two-week jaunts in a pair of decked-out RVs? Because it's the next best thing to a trade show, according to the firm's management team. "Some 90% of our machines in
the field had a live demo," says John Borkovec (at left, standing), GFI director of sales and marketing." The star attraction on the bus is GFI's Mx6 Ink Formulation Dispenser, which offers printers a first-hand look at how spot-color dispensing can be done with ease, speed and accuracy. The patented dispensing process, ink control system, quick-change AccureX™ Precision Dispense Cylinders and innovative EvolvePro™ software combine to save prep time. The Mx6 also can improve color consistency, eliminates ink mixing clean-up time, reduces lost press time waiting for ink, improves scheduling fidelity and helps reduce substrate waste. Printers also learn how easy it is to work off unused ink and reduce inventory, and how to save up to 40% by making spot color ink in-house instead of buying it directly from local suppliers. “With the Mx6, a printer can eliminate wasted ink, a lot of press downtime and waste ink disposal fees,” notes Ted Schaffer, business manager of pressroom and flexography for Fujifilm Graphic Systems USA. “The ROI on these devices is also extremely fast. Some of our customers have been able to justify them in a few months and, after they are paid for, they become a substantial profit center. I can’t think of a printer in America who couldn’t benefit from this technology, especially in this economic climate.”
